DUCTLESS HEATING & COOLING SYSTEMS

Ductless cooling was first invented by Daikin in 1973. Since then technology has changed to make this an attractive first option. Ductless cooling systems, which are sometimes referred to as ductless mini-splits or mini-split systems, have become extremely popular in the last decade. What was once an answer to adding a cooling system to an area of a commercial building which required additional cooling  has quickly become a solid alternative for many other reasons such as:

  • Cooling special areas, such as IT rooms with no ductwork
  • Supplement to areas with insufficient heating and cooling
  • Eliminate noisy ducted systems
  • Diversity of usage in commercial buildings with different load conditions in different areas
  • Ductless heat pump systems for commercial applications provide both heating and cooling.

Benefits of ductless systems include:

  • No ductwork required
  • Small equipment footprint
  • Significantly lower energy usage than conventional ducted systems
  • Easy zoning increases savings by cooling only the rooms you are using
  • Consistent room temperatures
  • Less equipment short cycling
  • Better humidity control
  • Higher comfort level

Variable Refrigerant Volume  & Variable Refrigerant Flow

Another Commercial system often referred to as a ductless system is the VRV (variable refrigerant volume) or VRF (variable refrigerant flow). Both are similar in what they accomplish. The VRV technology was originally designed by Daikin which owns the label VRV. Other manufacturers designate their systems VRF. These systems are similar in look to simpler mini split ductless systems but do have indoor air distribution units that can be ducted. These systems are available in heat pump and heat recovery systems. Like smaller residential mini-spilt heat pumps, VRV heat pumps can heat and cool, but can only perform one function at a time. VRV heat recovery systems can heat and cool at the same time. One area can be heated and another area cooled. The energy savings can be substantial since the area being cooled has heat absorbed into the system and it is carried to an area to be rejected from the system to the area being heated.

This technology is a more efficient and less expensive version of a chilled water/hot water cooling and heating system or a water source heat pump system. Like any mechanical system, the most important part of the project is the application and installation of the equipment.
